Plenty to see & do in the area

Mallaig nestles on the shores of the Atlantic coast amongst stunning scenery – just over an hour’s drive from Fort William.  There’s plenty to see and do in the area – the things outlined below are just a few of the many options on offer closeby. Island and Wildlife Cruises to the small isles of Eigg, Muck and Rum run from both Arisaig and Mallaig with opportunities for close sightings of whales, dolphins, sales, sharks, otters, puffins, golden eagles, sea eagles, shearwaters and much more.  From Mallaig, there are regular sailings ‘over the sea to Skye’  and also to Inverie where you can check out  Britain’s most remote pub –  both perfect for a day trip.

The Harry Potter Train – runs throughout the season from Fort William to Mallaig and back again, taking in the famous Glenfinnan viaduct – surely one of the Top Ten Railway Journeys of the World

Walking and Cycling – the natural beauty of Lochaber makes the area a walkers or cyclist’s paradise.

Canoeing/Kayaking – half or full-day canoe and Kayak hire is available through Rockhopper Sea Kayaking. The guys at Rockhopper also offer guided tours and lessons for all abilities.

Golf – the 9 hole course at Traigh has one of the most spectacular settings of any golf course and is rated by many as the best ’‘hidden gem’ golf course in the world

Fishing – try fishing directly from the local beaches – or for the more adventurous, trips can easily be organized on Loch Morar which has great trout fishing, or try the sea fishing trips available from Mallaig

Swimming – the crystal clear waters, warmed by the Gulf Stream are perfect for paddling, snorkeling and swimming. Mallaig also has a local swimming pool.

Photography – With stunning views, sunsets to die for and abundant wildlife Mallaig is a truly spectacular destination for photographers.

Birdwatching – Over 70 species of birds from Sea Eagles to Sandpipers have been seen in the local area

Wildlife –  there’s such an abundance of wildlife locally – you might be lucky and see an otter playing or you could see a seal or two.  From time to time you can see dolphins and porpoises in the bay.  If you venture out in a boat you might also see various different species of whales or even basking sharks. Back on dry land there are plenty of lovely highland cows in the fields and you might well see red deer and pine martens.
